Christopher Biggins Lights Up Hitchin

There was plenty of Christmas cheer to be found in Hitchin's Market Square on Friday (28 November) when residents braved the cold and gathered around the large Christmas tree.
They were waiting to see actor and 'I'm a Celebrity...' star Christopher Biggins switch on this year's Christmas tree lights - a truly memorable occasion for local children and adults alike.
Whilst anticipation of the arrival of the star built, entertainment was provided by AfterDark, warming refreshments by the kiosk in the square and retail therapy by surrounding shops that opened late for the occasion.
Mr Biggins was greeted with excited cheers from the crowd and was joined on stage by Richard Whitmore, one of the BBC's longest-serving newsreaders. After wishing the crowd a very happy christmas and new year, the countdown began and Christopher flicked the switch to further cheers and applause.
Fans seeking autographs and photos with Christopher Biggins were then given their opportunity and they certainly weren't disappointed - the star obliged until the very last of the crowd dispersed. At the same time children enjoyed dancing around the square to more tunes from AfterDark.
Biggins and Whitmore then headed to the Casino Night in aid of the Hitchin Christmas Lights Appeal, which took place at the Queen Mother Theatre. Richard Whitmore is the theatre's Chairman and Christopher Biggins the patron of its Youth Wing Appeal to build an additional rehearsal space for its Junior and Youth Groups to use - its current rehearsal spaces are just not big enough for these groups.
