Parishes Pilot New Plans for Codicote & St Ippolyts

Published: 30th June 2009 15:51
A new way of working to help address local people's concerns about transport and travel has just been piloted in the villages of Codicote and St Ippolyts.

The result is a series of safety measures including pelican crossings across the B656 and vehicle-activated signs in both villages. Other works in Codicote included a "School Safety Zone" and village gateway features at the entrance to the village.

Hertfordshire Highways has based the measures on the issues that the villages have outlined in their own Parish Plans - rather than writing a new plan for them from scratch. This represents a new way of working in rural areas, which Hertfordshire Highways has developed in partnership with the Community Development Agency for Hertfordshire.

With the community ‘owning' the plan, volunteers have given a lot of their time to help with the consultation work and the delivery of leaflets. The process has involved partnership working between the county council, local schools, parish councils, volunteers and the Community Development Agency.

"We're delighted with the outcome of this new way of working, which has already encouraged more children to walk to school as well as making it easier for people generally to get to and from local shops," said Stuart Pile, Executive Member for Highways and Transport. "These two parish plans were the first to be used in this way and the county council is now looking to adopt this process formally within the Rural Strategy, which will be considered by the Highways and Transport Panel in September."

‘After' counts have now taken place which show that three times as many children are now crossing the B656 on their way to and from school, using the new crossing facilities. .
