An initiative was launched in Hitchin on Monday June 23 to help reduce alcohol-related disorder. The safer clubs, pubs and bars scheme was launched in Hertfordshire in December 2007 and this is the first time it has been adopted in the Eastern Area.
Inspector Julie Wheatley from the Hitchin Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "This initiative will be a useful tool in helping us to further enhance the safety of people socialising in licensed premises in the town. It also rewards licensees for their commitment to the reduction of alcohol-related crime and disorder."
Ivory Bar in Brand Street is the first ever recipient of the accreditation in North Herts - the owner and management were presented with a certificate and plaque which will be displayed at the club's entrance to show customers their pledge to their safety.
Julie added: "The licensees of Ivory Bar have put in a lot of hard work in recent years to assist us in making a night out in Hitchin safer and to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder and this is proof of their commitment. The night time economy is constantly evolving and expanding and work is ongoing with our partners to further develop the scheme with other premises in the area."
The safer clubs, pubs and bars scheme is supported by Pubwatch, and partners in the scheme include Hertfordshire Constabulary, North Herts District Council, Hertfordshire County Council's Trading Standards and Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service.
The purpose of the award system is to encourage a range of alcohol-related businesses to achieve higher standards of management and operation as a demonstration of their commitment to the reduction of alcohol-related crime and disorder and anti-social behaviour. When they reach the required levels they achieve accreditation.
