New Management for Hitchin's Historic Market

It was cheers all round in Hitchin today when Hitchin Town Centre Initiative took over the management of the market from North Herts District Council.
Cllr Ian Knighton, NHDC Portfolio Holder responsible for markets, said: "This is an historic occasion for Hitchin. The market has been central to the town's economy for many centuries and we are all working together to keep it that way.
"The Council believes that Hitchin Town Centre Initiative, town centre manager Keith Hoskins and the traders themselves can best provide the impetus the market needs. They are part of the local community and are ideally placed to know what the community needs and wants in the 21st century.
"NHDC will continue to work closely with the new management team and give them our full support. This is a positive move for us all."
Keith Hoskins said: "Hitchin Markets Ltd brings together expertise from market traders and Hitchin Initiative to bring fresh ideas and a fresh impetus to this vital area of our town centre. We fully realise that it will take time to restore the fortunes of our markets but are very committed to the task."
To make sure that the changeover runs without a hitch, there will be a handover period in July with Hitchin Initiative working alongside NHDC.
