Whitwell are spot on
All but one of last weekend's fixtures were cup games and despite the atrocious weather all but three games managed to get played.
In the second round of the Challenge Cup Third Division Green Man Ickleford took Premier Division Whitwell all the way to the wire, but eventually lost out in a penalty shoot-out. The score after 90 minutes was 1-1 and at the end of extra time the scores were again level - this time at 2-2. Whitwell then kept their cool to win the game on penalties, with the final score being 7-6.
Crown Stotfold beat Red Star 5-3 in a thrilling encounter in the second round of the Premier Division Cup.
There were four games scheduled in the Division One Cup, but unfortunately the matches between SMU & HTS Reserves and Kcinsatop Reserves & Whitwell Reserves were called off due to the weather. Shillington were hosts to Wanderers who were out for revenge following a heavy league defeat early in the season. Despite a very heavy pitch Wanderers played some good football and took an early lead through Mark Norriss as he squeezed the ball in at the near post, and then Gavin Fowler doubled Wanderers' lead about 20 minutes later. Shillington applied some pressure, but a solid Wanderers' defence and some fine saves from keeper Kevin Parrish meant the score remained at 2-0 until half time. In the second half Shillington levelled the game with two fortunate goals. Their first came via a shot from outside the box, which took a wicked deflection off defender Tony Burns, and the second was from a cross that went straight in at the far post. The match then went into extra time and during the first period Wanderers scored twice through Barney Buck, the first a cool finish past the advancing keeper and the second a follow-up from a badly taken penalty. Shillington pulled one back five minutes from time, but Wanderers hung on for a well deserved victory. Chequers Stotfold scored 5 against Jackmans Jackdaws who could only manage 2 in reply. Getting on the score sheet for Chequers were Darren Westbrook, Graham Albon, Lee Smith and 2 from Gareth Head.
The Division Two Cup saw North Herts Hatters have a comfortable 5-1 win away to Clifton Sunday in the first round. The three remaining games were in the second round and these saw Operation Swordfish put last week's defeat behind them as they easily won 8-1 against Broadmead. Despite the sodden conditions, Red Hart and Cannon Reserves played out a competitive fixture. Unfortunately Red Hart had to take to the field with only 10 fit players and, despite midfield general Craig Adams thundering home with a tremendous drive, Cannon had enough to come out eventual 6-1 winners. On the score sheet for Cannon were Robert Badrick with 2 and there was 1 each for Rob Drayton, Jason Harrison, Liam Gent and Nick Ryall. Oceans Eleven also got a hatful of goals as they beat Shillington Sunday 8-2, Ross Pateman being the star for Oceans by getting a double hat trick with the other 2 goals coming from Ricky Day and Glen Stuart who scored with a superb header.
In the Division Three Cup Wanderers Reserves beat struggling Paynes Park 4-1, but only after being taken to extra time. Wanderers opened the scoring through Dean Burns before Paynes Park equalised. Many missed chances by Wanderers meant that the game went into extra time, but then they found their scoring boots as they hit three in five minutes thanks to Ben Shanahan, Mark Bolton and Mick Tennison. The game between Wilbury and AC Malone Reserves was the final game to be called off due to the weather.
The only league game to be played was in Division Three and this saw Ian Hutchison getting a hat trick for Athletico Hitchin as they went level on points at the top of the table thanks to a hard fought 3-2 win against Clifton Sunday Reserves.
It was also the third round of the Herts Sunday Senior Cup last weekend, but unfortunately out of the four teams competing only PJ Hitchin made it through to the next round as they had a good away win against Colne Valley beating them 5-1. Getting the goals for PJ were Ryan Foster with 2, plus Craig Skelton, Dorian Small and Lol Cooper getting 1 each. A goal from Scot Halsey for Cannon could not prevent them from losing at home as Hammer FC scored 4. The Park went down 5-2 to Probuild (Sunday) and Kcinsatop lost by the same score away to The Comet.
