Hitchin Sunday Football League: Stevenage Outsiders Progress to Next Round

Author: Dave Rush Published: 9th February 2010 14:21
Last weekend saw a full fixture list for only the second time since the Christmas break. The matches mainly centred around Cup games in order to try and get the fixtures back on track following the severe weather over recent weeks.

There were several games played in the first round of the George John Cup and each tie saw teams trying to beat opposition from a higher Division. Division Two side Stevenage Outsiders won 1-0 at home to SMU from Division One and were the only side who managed to beat higher league opposition. The winning goal being scored by Lewis Littlechild in the last minute of extra time. Premier Division Whitwell were at home to Red Hart from Division Two and Red Hart put in a superb team performance to come within a whisker of putting out Whitwell. Midway through the second half ace marksman Adam Myers gave Red Hart the lead with a thunderbolt from the edge of the area. Although other chances fell to Myers he was unable to convert them which proved to be costly as with just minutes remaining two well taken goals saw Whitwell squeeze through to the next round. Athletico Hitchin Reserves from Division Two took on HTS from the Premier Division but despite putting in a valiant display went down by a score of 3-1. The Park from the Premier Division played Division One side Dynamo Letchworth and came out 6-3 victors in a nine goal thriller. Wymondley Old Boys from Division Two were at home to Broadmead from Division One and narrowly lost by a score of 2-1. Wanderers from Division One played Premier Division side Bar Amigo and for the first twenty minutes enjoyed a lot of possession and looked the most likely side to score. However, Bar Amigo scored twice in the space of ten minutes to have the advantage at the break. Five minutes into the second half Wanderers got themselves back into the game thanks to a well taken header from James Taylor. Unfortunately Wanderers could not push on from there to level the game and Bar Amigo took full advantage from this and scored two further goals to make the final score 4-1. There was also one game played in the second round of the same competition and this saw CCL from Division Two face Clifton Sunday from Division One. Clifton were too strong for CCL and came out emphatic 8-0 winners. Chris Slough led the way with a well taken hat trick with Will Walker, Bryce Tudball, Alan Gilchrist, Paul Bosher and Leighton Machin also on the score sheet.

It was the quarter final stage of the Herts Sunday Senior Cup last Sunday and unfortunately the two sides from the Hitchin Sunday League were eliminated from the competition. Last seasons beaten finalists PJ Hitchin lost to Hammer FC following a penalty shoot out. Hammer took the lead in the first half from a penalty awarded for handball but PJ equalised through Andy Wilshere just before the break. Hammer FC restored their lead in the second half and with ten minutes to go PJ themselves were awarded a penalty but the resulting spot kick was saved by the Hammer keeper. With three minutes of normal time to go PJ were awarded a free kick just outside the area which Jack Gregson took and scored to take the tie into extra time. With no goals in extra time the game went to the dreaded penalty shoot out and it was Hammer FC who kept their cool to win the shoot out 4-3. In the other game Cannon lost 4-1 at home against Oakview FC.

In the second round of the Division One Cup league leaders Athletico Hitchin were at home and suffered a rare defeat against Cannon Reserves. Cannon coming out 4-2 victors. HTS Reserves faced AC Malone and comfortably won 5-1.

The final cup game of the day was in the Reserve Cup and Wanderers Reserves were at home to Clifton Sunday Reserves. Although it was Wanderers who opened the scoring through Ryan Manning, Clifton then scored three goals to take control of the game. Guiseppi Follano scored twice with the other one coming from Dave Dice. A second goal from Wanderers scored by Mick Tennison a few minutes from the end ensured a frantic finish to the game but Clifton held on for the victory.

In the Premier Division Oceans Eleven were at home against Shillington Pirates and came out 3-1 winners and moving them into second place on goal difference. Getting the goals for Oceans were Ross Pateman, Richard Green and Trevor Long. Red Star went goal mad as they won 11-2 away to Stotfold Chequers, with Gareth Head getting the two consolation goals for Chequers.

There was only one game in Division Two and this saw Wilbury win 5-2 at home in a hard fought game against Elite. On the score sheet for Wilbury were Tyrone Gittens, Junior Stewart, Rob Tanner, Junior Lungey and Luke Taggart. The goals for Elite coming from a Chris Burniston header plus an own goal following a Dan Nash free kick.
