British Schools Museum Events: August to December 2008

Here you will find a list of all the events that the British Schools Museum has planned from now until the end of the year.
The museum's general opening hours are Tuesday 10am to 4pm, Saturday 10am to 1pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm, and on the second weekend of most months you can play a variety of the museum's board games with your family!
Admission costs £4 (child £2). A family ticket is available at £10 for two adults and up to four children of school age.

Sunday with the Family
On the last Sunday of each month bring the family to play and learn together at The British Schools Museum from 2.30pm to 4.30pm:
- Sunday 31 August: Back to school Victorian style. Another opportunity to experience a Victorian school lesson. Timed lessons at 2.45pm and 3.45pm.
- Sunday 28 September: Make a ‘wedding cake' or gas mask box. Learn the secret of a wartime wedding cake.
- Sunday 26 October: Julie Skinner will help you create simple, stunning decorations which even the youngest and oldest fingers can do.
- Sunday 30 November: Board and tabletop games, and songs that Grandma and Grandad used to know. Gather round and enjoy playing and singing together.
Lunchtime Tea & Talk (12.30pm to 1.30pm)
£3:50, including a cuppa. Sandwiches available or bring your own.
- Tuesday 5, 12, 19 & 26 August: Margaret Miles will talk about her art exhibition (see below), displayed in the Lancasterian Schoolroom. You will be able to view her art with greater understanding and appreciation.
- Tuesday 9 September: Mel Knights will talk on "Handy Hints for the Edwardian Housewife". How to run your home Edwardian-style.
- Tuesday 14 October: Victorian Christmas decorations. Julie Skinner demonstrates how to create your own masterpieces.
- Tuesday 11 November: Mrs Ann Slaney, Chairman of North Herts & Beds branch of the Embroiderers' Guild, will talk about the Guild and the Embroidery Exhibition and will illustrate her talk with photographs and some embroideries.
Saturday 2 August to 31 August: Art Exhibition: "Fire in the Works II - The Art of Dreaming"
An opportunity to view a selection of the works of local artist Margaret Miles. Normal museum entrance times and charges apply.
Margaret will talk about her work and share her ideas with visitors on Sundays 3, 10 and 24 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, as well as on Tuesdays throughout August (see Lunchtime Tea & Talk above).
Saturday 2 August @ 7.30pm: Grand Opening Event
Enjoy a glass of wine, meet Margaret Miles the artist, hear her talk, listen to the music and read the poetry which complement her work. Cost: £5.
Wednesday 20 August & Thursday 28 August (10am to 12.30pm): Crafty Capers
Holiday activities for children aged 5 and over.
Lots of craft activities to learn and practise: sewing, knitting, pompoms, card-making, sweet-making and more.
Cost: £4 per session, including all materials and light refreshments. Numbers are limited - please book in advance.
Saturday 6 September to Sunday 30 November: Autumn Exhibition: "New Embroidery at the Old School"
An exhibition of embroidery by the members of the North Herts & Beds branch of the Embroiderers' Guild illustrating traditional techniques as well as modern interpretations including quilting and mixed media.
Normal museum admission times and charges apply.
Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September: Heritage Weekend
The museum's opening hours are extended on the Saturday to 10am to 4pm for this national celebration of historic buildings. The museum is open as usual on the Sunday (2pm to 5pm).
Friday 19 September @ 7.30pm: Wartime Entertainment in WWII: "Can I Do You Now, Sir?"
Stuart Antrobus will tell the story of wartime entertainment in the 1940s through extracts from period recordings. From Robb Wilton's "The day war broke out" and the cheekie-chappie rudery of Max Miller and Tommy Trinder to the craziness of Tommy Hanley's popular radio show, ITMA, and the comedy songs of George Formby and Spike Jones - all did their bit to keep up morale during those dark days.

Saturday 27 September (10am to 1pm): Workshop: "Traditional Embroidery Techniques"
An Embroiderers' Guild member will lead the morning, demonstrating embroidery stitches and techniques. Visitors will have the opportunity to try out the stitches in a mini sampler format.
Normal admission charges apply, plus there will be a nominal charge for any materials used.
Friday 3 October (7pm for a 7.30pm start): Quiz Night
For teams of 6 to 8 people - individuals and smaller groups can be put together into teams on the night.
Bring your own picnic supper and a drink.

Saturday 11 October at 7.30pm: Harvest Concert
"Thy Goodness Crowns the Year " by the Bedford Gallery Quire who will be singing and playing West Gallery music in our magical Lancasterian classroom.
Tickets cost £10 (concessions £8.50), which includes a glass of wine and light refreshments.
Friday 17 October @ 7.30pm: Buzzworks: Hitchin's Community Bee Garden - The First Year
A talk by Robin Dartington, who explains and demonstrates how bees are kept healthily at BuzzWorks to produce honey. Bees have a vital role in the environment. Their existence is important to mankind and we must ensure their survival.

Saturday 25 October (10am to 1pm): Workshop: "Young Textiles"
The Young Embroiderers' Group leaders will run an exciting session working with textiles and mixed media for young people aged from 6 years.
Cost: £4, including all materials and light refreshments.
Christmas Shopping
Buy your Christmas presents from the British Schools Museum shop, the perfect place to find that extra special Christmas stocking filler. The shop is open Tuesdays from 10am to 4pm, Saturdays 10am to 1pm and Sundays 2pm to 5pm until the end of November. Entry to the shop and café is free.
Wednesday 29 October & Thursday 30 October (10am to noon): Play & Draw: The Games & Toys of Victorian Times
Half term holiday activities for children aged 5 and over.
Cost: £3 per session, including materials and light refreshments. It helps if you book in advance.
Friday 21 November @ 7.30 pm: " Pottering at Sothebys"
Come and be amused again by Joyce Donald who will entertain us in her own inimitable fashion.

Saturday 22 November (10am to 1pm): Workshop: "21st-century Stitch"
The morning will be spent looking at contemporary embroidery with opportunity to ‘play' with stitch, fabric and surface embellishmvents to create a small stitched motif.
Normal Museum admission charges apply, although there will be a nominal charge for any materials used.
Saturday 6th December (10am to 3pm): The British Schools Museum Annual Christmas Fair
The ideal opportunity to buy your Christmas presents - homemade cakes and preserves, toys, books, bric-a-brac, jewellery - all this and Father Christmas too.
Entrance FREE.
Saturday 20 December (7pm to 11pm): British Schools Annual Christmas Party @ Hitchin Town Hall
Dancing, games, carols, mummers.
MC: Barry Goodman with The Forest Band.
This is the 27th year of one of the best real Christmas parties in all England and in Hitchin's beautiful Town Hall too.
