Beacons Light the Borough to Mark The Queen's Diamond Jubilee
Waltham Cross Beacon - Flame in Full Flow
On Bank Holiday Monday 4th June, large crowds attended the lighting of six beacons across the Borough of Broxbourne to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Beacons were lit at the following locations so everyone was close:
- Barclay Park, Park View, Hoddesdon - Roger Merton, President of the Rotary Club of Hoddesdon
- Pound Close Recreation Ground, Hoddesdon - Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bren Perryman
- Baas Hill Common, Broxbourne - Peter Worth of Hoddesdon Society and Dr. B. Lowe of Broxbourne Open Space Trustees
- Cheshunt Park, Park Lane, Cheshunt - The Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Eddy Rowland
- Goffs Oak Playing Fields - Michael Taylor of Goffs Oak Community Association
- Waltham Cross Playing Fields, Station Approach - local elected members
The enthusiastic crowds enjoyed remarkable weather and everyone was in good spirits, joining in with the singing of the National Anthem, ‘God Save The Queen'.
All the arrangements went smoothly with no hiccups and overall the events, which were free to attend, were successful.
At 10pm, a firework was lit to announce to the community that they should gather at the beacon site. At 10.15pm, another firework was lit to announce the lighting of the beacon, and at 10.30pm, four fireworks were ignited to coincide with Her Majesty The Queen lighting the beacon at Buckingham Palace.
