Council Proposes New Location for Market Traders' Parking in Hoddesdon

Council Proposes New Location for Market Traders' Parking in Hoddesdon

Proposed Hoddesdon Market Traders' Parking

Plan of the proposed new parking location at Taverners Way, Hoddesdon

Having listened to both shop owners and market traders, the Borough Council proposes a new parking location for market traders in Hoddesdon town centre during the redevelopment of the Tower Centre.

The Council has agreed to provide additional parking facilities for market traders' vehicles in Taverners Way, close to the town centre. The site will require minor clearance and fencing work before it is suitable and is expected to be ready for use within the next week.

Market traders will not be able to park in the High Street on Wednesdays or Fridays, other than for setting up at the start of the day and dismantling in the afternoon. The Council feels that this solution addresses the concerns of Hoddesdon's retailers whilst not unduly inconveniencing the market traders or impacting on the number of parking spaces available to the general public on market days.

In summary, for the duration of the works on the Tower Centre, the arrangements will be as follows:

  • 1. No market traders' vehicles will park in the High Street other than at the beginning and end of the day;
  • 2. Some market traders will have to park their vehicles further away than previously in Haslewood Avenue, Taverners Way or Broxbourne Civic Hall.

The redevelopment work on the Tower Centre is now underway, with completion scheduled for November 2013. During the redevelopment period, two car parks (Burford Street and the lower section of Taverners Way South) are allocated for the sole use of residents of Tower Heights, and Tower Centre businesses. The combined effect is a loss of some 200 parking spaces previously available to the public.

Burford Street car park has been used to accommodate market traders' vehicles on Wednesdays and Fridays, and so, for the duration of its closure, provision has had to be made for them to park elsewhere. Alternative parking arrangements have been put in place in Haslewood. In order to meet the anticipated demand for additional market trader vehicle parking, the Council carried out a consultation on a proposal to implement a prohibition of driving restriction in the High Street on Fridays, as is currently in place on Wednesdays, and to allow market traders to park there on both market days. Responses to the consultation from some of Hoddesdon's retailers showed limited support for this proposal.
