Friday 1 June is the start of National Volunteering Week and Hertfordshire County Council is using the occasion to raise awareness of the volunteering opportunities it has open to people living in Hertfordshire.
Volunteering is, of course, a great way of putting something back into the community. But it also benefits the volunteers themselves. It can be a good way of meeting people, developing skills and giving a CV the edge. And if that wasn't enough, the latest research shows that people who volunteer are measurably healthier and happier than those who don't.
Chris Hayward, Cabinet Member for Hertfordshire Local, said: "Here at Hertfordshire County Council, we are grateful for the expertise and support of our 500-strong volunteering community. These unsung heroes are making a massive difference in our county. They don't take the place of paid staff. Rather, they complement the work of paid employees, adding value by applying their skills and abilities to projects and tasks which the county council could not otherwise deliver."
Here are just some of the amazing things our volunteers do:
- Help and inspire young people to read through our library service's Summer Reading Challenge
- Conserve local wildlife and green space as a Countryside Management Service volunteer
- Help keep people fit and active as a Health Walk leader
- Give someone who cares full-time for a relative a much-needed break as a sitter with our Breakaway for Carers service
- Support their local school as a school governor
- Help save lives by spreading fire safety messages as a Community Fire Safety Volunteer
- Mentor 16-19 year olds and help them realise their true potential
- Deliver library books to disabled or housebound people
Volunteering does not have to be a massive commitment - many of our volunteers do so for only an hour or so a week.
