A FEAST OF HISTORIC EVENTS THROUGHOUT WALES

From Criccieth Castle in north Wales to Caerphilly Castle in the south, Cadw has arranged a feast of over 150 exciting events across twenty sites to entertain the whole family. 

Beaumaris Castle: Courtesy www.cadw.wales.gov.uk  The season kick starts at BEAUMARIS CASTLE on Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 April (11am-4pm) as visitors are invited to step back in time with the crafts and soldiers of Gwent.

 

Raglan Castle: Courtesy www.cadw.wales.gov.ukRAGLAN CASTLE will also be brought to life with C17th Life as the Marcher Stuarts bring colourful characters, crafts and cookery, soldiers and sword to the castle on Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 April (11am-4pm).

Spring Bank Holiday weekend sees a feast of medieval entertainment by the Harlech Medieval Society at HARLECH CASTLE on Sunday 24 & Monday 25 May (11am-4pm). CAERPHILLY CASTLE will be under siege and chance to witness the firing of the mighty siege engines on Sunday 3 & Monday 4 May and Sunday 24 & Monday 25 May. Marking the Beaumaris Festival 2008 theme of War and peace, Soldiers and Clerics make their camp at BEAUMARIS CASTLE on Sunday 24 & Monday 25 May.

Come and enjoy music to your ears as Wales' leading early music consort Pavane perform at TINTERN ABBEY on 24 & 25 May.  

Don't miss the fantastic Lord Chamberlain's Men at Cadw sites this June performing their take on Twelfth Night at CAERLEON ROMAN FORTRESS AND BATHS on Wednesday 3 June, CHEPSTOW CASTLE on Thursday 4 June, CAERNARFON CASTLE on Thursday 25 June and CONWY CASTLE on Friday 26, Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 June. Another June highlight is Body, Soul and Conflict - The Triangle of Life in Medieval Wales - a trilogy of events at three different sites over one weekend. In south Wales on the weekend of 27 & 28 June,11am-4pm part one - Warfare and Conflict takes place at CHEPSTOW CASTLE, part two - Food and Home Life is at RAGLAN CASTLE and part three, Spiritual Life is at TINTERN ABBEY.

The same trilogy of events takes place in north Wales on the weekend of 4 & 5 July,11am-4pm. Part one, War and Conflict takes place at RHUDDLAN CASTLE, part two - Food and Home Life will be performed at DENBIGH CASTLE and the third part, Spiritual Life takes place at VALLE CRUCIS ABBEY.

The Boys are Back in Town! July sees a Military Spectacular in store at CAERLEON ROMAN AMPHITHEATRE on Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July, 11am-4pm with Roman soldiers and a living history encampment while The Rise and the Decline of Venta Silirium at CAERWENT ROMAN TOWN on Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 July, 11am-4pm is ideal for anyone who wants to learn more about what was once the largest centre of civilian population in Roman Wales.

Come and meet Master James of St George, the architect who designed King Edward I's magnificent castle at CAERNARFON CASTLE on Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July and Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 August, 11am-4pm.

Visitors to the charming Rug Chapel will have the opportunity to step back to the 17th century and enjoy Rug's 3rd annual Craft Fayre on Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July, 11am-4pm. A host of crafts people will be on hand to show off their medieval skills in a living history encampment and visitors can try their hand at some of the old fashioned craft methods.

In August Shakespeare's romantic comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream will be performed by Taking Flight Theatre, a professional company of disabled and non disabled actors at BLAENAVON IRONWORKS on Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 August.

The Story of H.M. Stanley, the nineteenth century explorer who was born in Denbigh, north Wales will be told by Company K at DENBIGH CASTLE this August 15 & 16, 11am-4pm.

Jayne Rowlands, Cadw's Head of Presentation said, "We're certain there'll be something for everyone on this year's programme and it's a fantastic way to introduce history to young and old alike."
