Highland pupils join Junior jogscotland campaign

Pupils from Strathpeffer Primary are put through their paces.

Pupils in Highland Primary schools are getting the chance to take part in a national running and jogging campaign aimed at improving their health and fitness.

Highland Council's Active Schools team is rolling out the Junior jogscotland programme to all 184 primary schools. This programme makes running and jogging activities for children fun and inclusive. Training and equipment has been completed for all Highland schools.

Alan Clark, Highland Council's Active Schools Manager said: "Junior jogscotland
ties in well with the Council's aims of getting ‘more children, more active, more often'. Training and equipment has been completed for all schools.  We hope to encourage a one hour a day physical activity target for young people. "

Alistair Currie, Manager of jogscotland said: "The Co-operative Junior jogscotland programme was created to tackle obesity and lack of physical activity among children in Scotland, while showing them that being active can be fun. It is through programmes like this we can capture children's interest in sport and lead them towards having a fitter and healthier life style lasting right from their childhood to adulthood."

Established in 2002 by scottishathletics, the governing body of athletics in Scotland, jogscotland uses simple, gentle walk/jog/run programmes to encourage everyone to get out and be active.

The jogscotland programme is supported by NHS Health Scotland, sportscotland and the Scottish Government Health Department; three national bodies working together to help many people in Scotland adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

Co-operative Junior jogscotland programme started in January 2007, the programme uses fun running based games to get children active. For further information see the jogscotland website at: http://www.jogscotland.org.uk/
