Q: What advice can you offer when buying a decent hairdryer?
A: Firstly make sure you buy a high wattage hair-dryer - at least 1400w to ensure it has a good quality power which also helps prevents the hair from being fly-away and leaves the end result looking smooth and sleek. We supply the dryers we use in the salon, which is another good tip. Rather than buying one from Boots buy one from a salon as they will always be used professionally and that way you can't go wrong. Just because we sell them doesn't mean they are going to be more expensive. We retail ours at £35.
Q: What's the hair-style trend for now and who does it suit? (e.g. people with long / round faces)
A: Well the ultimate hair style this year has been the Posh Bob which is fantastic. All the stylists at our salon have loved it as we have finally come away from the long layered look and we have a hair cut which is far more challenging. The Posh Bob is very sleek and creates alot of volume which is great for clients with fine, limp hair. Although it is a short haircut it still has length around the face which creates a very feminine, sexy look. The style can be adapted to almost anyone because you can recreate the look whether it's left slightly longer or taken shorter to suit the individual. You can also angle the haircut around the face softer or opt for a much more sharp and defined look depending on the face shape.
Q: I've got quite a small face and a small forehead and would like to have a fringe. But I've heard this can make my face look smaller. Any ideas?
A: Yes if you have quite a small face and a small forehead I would recommend a side fringe which is long sweeping softly across the face rather than a full fringe as this will only enhance a small forehead and give the impression the face is smaller. It would look far too harsh!
Q: I'd like to liven up my hair colour and need advice as I've never had my hair dyed before. I'm naturally dark brown and would like something subtle but striking without looking brash. What should I go for?
A: Soft tones are very much in this season which would be ideal for you. As you have a dark brown base, soft caramel tones weaved throughout the hair would be a lovely contrast but would also look quite naturally highlighted or sun-kissed if you like - and would look gorgeous sliced through a side fringe!
Q: How do I get my style to last all day without appearing stiff and moulded?
A: Products are essential in re-creating hair styles and maintain a look throughout the day. At the end of the day you never see a hair stylist create a look without the little help of a few products. If we need to use them you will most definitely need to use them at home. We use Tigi hair products in the salon and they are by far the best as they leave the hair feeling natural so it doesn't leave the hair stiff or moulded. Also, as they are a professional product they are very concentrated so small amounts only need to be used. I have used plenty of different brands and Tigi stands out. What you see is what you get - the packaging says it all e.g. Dumb blonde shampoo- is used for blonde highlighted hair (of any tone) or seriously straight - For those who want the shiny sleek glossy look this is the perfect product or how about Big and bigger - need I say more?! And there are many more products to create the perfect results all day long.
Q: I've got naturally frizzy hair and spend ages blow-drying it straight. What are the best products to use that will cut this time in half and ensure it lasts all day?
A: I have the perfect products for your hair type. Tigi does a whole range for frizzy hair called Control freak. There are 4 products in this range which are listed on the bottles 1-4 which indicates the order in which you use them, and they all have a anti-humidity agent in them to fight that frizz!
Firstly we have the Control freak Shampoo Step 1 which is then followed by the Control freak conditioner Step 2. You will find when using the conditioner it will foam slightly. This is the agent in it preventing your hair from frizzing! Next once your hair has been shampooed and conditioned and thoroughly rinsed we have Step 3 which is the serum, This has something in it called micro-beads which is designed to keep the hair extra straight and sleek all day long. This product is a perfect heat protector too, so this can be used when straightening the hair with irons. And finally we have Step 4 Control Freak Extra Straight. This is a light spray moose which is used on top of step 3 to ensure the hair is well covered and protected against any humidity. You get great results when all 4 products are used together. If you repeat this regime every time you wash your hair and then Iron your hair (this is better than blow-drying) this will half your styling time and achieve better results.
Q: I lead a busy lifestyle so don't have much time for my hair. The problem is I've got fine, blow-away hair. How can I make it appear fuller in the minimum amount of time as possible?
A: If your hair is fine and fly-away, to achieve a fuller voluminous result. Spray in Tigi's Superstar Queen 4 a Day at the roots only (this product gives you root lift) and then apply Superstar Volumising Leave-in Conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends then style as normal or blow dry with a big round brush for extra body. This will give you the look you want to achieve.
Q: How often should I really be getting my hair cut?
A: You should be having your haircut every 6-8 weeks and definitely no longer than 12 weeks! The same goes for colouring.
Q: Should men dye their hair to cover grey or does "au naturel" look better?
A: Definitely! I think it's great that men want to colour their hair - why shouldn't they? We can match something up as close to their natural colour as possible so it appears very natural because most men don't want their hair to look coloured - but its completely up to them.
Q: I'm trying to grow my hair long but have a huge problem with split ends. I don't want to get my hair cut short to get rid of them - is there anything else I can do?
A: The most common cause of split ends is because you're not having your hair cut regularly, which means that the hair at the ends is more prone to damage caused by the sun or bleaching for example. It causes the hair shaft to split in two and if this is left and not being trimmed regularly it will travel up the hair shaft and become worse. I'm afraid there is no cure for this apart from having it cut. However, if the extent of the damage has gone too far and you don't want to be having your hair cut short there is an alternative treatment called Nanomax which will tame the split ends and smooth the cuticle of the hair shaft so the split ends lay flat. In essence it will not get rid of them - just hide them, but it is a fantastic treatment to have and then you can attend the salon to have your hair trimmed every 6weeks and eventually we will cut out all of the split ends and that's your problem solved.
