History of the PWDRA

The Petts Wood & District Residents was founded in 1929 to "preserve and develop the amenities of the district and to promote an active interest in local government". It is strictly non-party and non-sectarian.

Paul Stanley, Chairman of the PWDRA

Paul says..."We moved to our current house in Petts Wood in 1999 but our association with the house goes back a long way. The house is my wife's family home plus we lived in the house in the 1970's while her parents went to live abroad.

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to retire early and I felt I would like to give something back to Petts Wood and help to keep it a quiet, well-maintained residential area of immense character. It struck me that the residents' association was the place to start, with its aim ‘To preserve and develop the amenities of the district'. Initially ‘preserve' and ‘develop' seemed to me to be contradictory, but on reflection I believe that it is perfectly possible to preserve the area's 1930's feel while at the same time embracing those developments that will benefit the area and its residents.

On joining the residents' association in 2006 I was asked to take over as editor of the Gazette, a job I took on with some trepidation. One year later I was asked to stand as chairman, which I agreed to do although I considered myself rather too new to the residents' association. As in all things, time will tell if I was right."

Knoll Residents' Assocation

ROLE OF THE ASSOCIATION

The Association has been involved with a number of matters and issues concerning its locality and surrounding area. The Committee has met regularly throughout the year at around six weekly intervals to consider and discuss a range of subjects most of which have been reported back to residents in its Seasonal Newsletters.

The Association continues to participate to a service provided by Bromley Council whereby it receives copies of meeting papers and minutes of the Committee meetings covering most of the matters under consideration by the Council. It has also been consulted on a number of subjects by the Council and has pursued matters raised with by members of the Association on an individual basis and drawn attention to local issues with public service providers.

The Association also keeps in touch with its neighbouring resident associations and more generally through its attendance at meetings of the Bromley Federation of Residents Associations where a number of Borough-wide issues are discussed.
