London leads the way in reducing giveaway bag use

London's borough leaders welcome the Prime Minister's move to introduce legislation next month that will force companies to charge for single use plastic bags if they fail to end their reliance on them within a year.

London Councils is currently pushing a Bill through Parliament that if legislated will ban outright the use of all throw-away bags in the capital.  This follows a city-wide consultation with Londoners, in which 90 per cent of respondents called for action to be taken on plastic and other throw-away bags.

Commenting on the Prime Minster's announcement Chairman of London Councils Merrick Cockell said: "London Councils has led the way on consulting on, and instigating, a ban on throw away shopping bags in the capital but we recognise that the problem spreads way beyond the borders of the M25.

"We very much welcome the Prime Minister's move today to reduce throw away bag use across the country, and we look forward to supporting him in developing this important piece of legislation"
