Kerbside Recycling in Bury Reaches Record High

Published: 24th November 2011 12:55

People in Bury have risen to the challenge to boost Bury's recycling rate and are already on track to win their race to recycle.

Waste collection changes brought in by Bury Council at the start of October have been embraced by residents throughout the borough and as a result a 50 per cent jump in recycling is expected to be confirmed later this month. Early figures show that recycling has already increased from 27.8% to around 43%.

Under the new collection service, grey bins moved to being emptied once every other week. The green bag (for paper and cardboard) was replaced by a green bin and households with a brown bin can now put food waste in them as well as garden waste.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, executive member for environment and economy, said: "This is a fantastic achievement, and shows what we can do when we all work together.

"I must say a huge "thank you" to the people of Bury for getting behind our recycling drive and achieving these figures. They are doing a fantastic job and I'd like to encourage everyone to keep up their good work and keep recycling more for Bury - every household counts!

"Each percentage increase in recycling is good news: not just for the environment, but for council tax payers. Every ton of waste which we can recycle means less money we have to pay out in taxes and charges for burying rubbish in the ground."

Figures show that in the first month alone 40% less waste has gone to landfill and the amount of paper and cardboard that has gone to be recycled (for which the council receives an income) has increased by 85%.

Cllr Isherwood added: "We are doing our best to improve the new system, including finding ways of increasing food waste collections and the number of households that have a brown bin.

"We appreciate that some residents are still awaiting delivery of recycling bins but we will be getting these to you as soon as we can - please bear with us, and thank you for your patience.

"In the meantime, Christmas is coming soon, and with all the extra waste that this can create householders will have even more chance to recycle for Bury."

Reminders:
  • Please leave out your bins by 7am on your collection day.
  • To check your bin collection dates, go to www.bury.gov.uk/bincollections where you can print off a calendar.
  • For disposing of food waste in the brown bin, please use only the biodegradable liners supplied with your food caddy.
