Published: 14th June 2012 11:26

Police are appealing for information after a woman reported that she had been subjected to a serious sexual assault in Shawforth over the weekend.

PoliceThe incident is believed to have taken place on Old Lane, Shawforth, between 3.30am and 5.20am on Sunday morning (10th of June).

The 32 year old victim left the Vogue nightclub on Bacup Road, Rawtenstall around 3.30am in a taxi with three men that she had met outside the club.

The taxi drove to an address in Bacup where one of the men got out before dropping the remaining two men and the woman off on Rochdale Road near to the junction with Market Street.

The group then walked towards Old Lane, a dirt tract situated just off the main road, where the incident took place.

Detectives investigating are keen to trace any witnesses and need to speak to anyone that has any information.

Detective Inspector Marie Haworth from Pennine CID said, "We are doing everything we can to trace the people responsible for this attack and I would urge anyone with any information at all that they think could help to contact police as soon as possible.

"In particular, we are very keen to speak to the taxi driver who transported the group from outside Vogue nightclub back to Shawforth so if you are that taxi driver or you know who that driver was, then please get in touch with us, as you could have information that is crucial to the investigation."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on the new non-emergency number 101 or alternatively, people can call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org.
