Fitzpatrick's Temperance Bar

The newly-refurbished Fitzpatrick's Temperance Bar is now re-open for business after being closed for four months.

What is a Temperance Bar?
In Victorian times, alcohol abuse was one of the greatest problems faced by Britain, thanks to an abundance of cheap ale and gin.
The Temperance Society was started by a Methodist cheesemaker in Preston and people belonging to the Society pledged never to drink alcohol. The Society rapidly grew in size and temperance bars emerged as the place where members of the society would meet.
Who were the Fitzpatricks?
The Fitzpatricks were an Irish family who emigrated to Lancashire in the 1800s and sold their uniquely-blended family recipes throughout Lancashire. They believed that their recipes had many health benefits.
What happened to Temperance Bars?
Temperance Bars fell prey to the emergence and popularity of new drinks brought in from the United States. However, Rawtenstall's Temperance Bar remains to this day due to its history and popularity, making it the last of the original temperance bars in Britain.
More about the Fitzpatrick's Temperance Bar of today
Following its recent refurbishment, Fitzpatrick's has now re-opened for business and customers are pleased with the new look. The Bar has been thoughtfully-designed and has retained its character and some of the original features.

The cordials for which Fitzpatricks are famous are available to purchase to take home or to drink on the premises. Perhaps the drink that most people associate with Fitzpatricks is 'Sarsparilla', which recently beat off competitors to be crowned the best Sarsparilla. Fitzpatrick's 'Dandelion and Burdock' is also award-winning, having been presented with a bronze medal by the Guild of Fine Food Retailers Great Taste Awards in 2006.

Fitzpatrick's is also one of the last traditional English herb stores and is pleased to offer popular and less-common herbs, both of which can be bought loose.
In addition, Fitzpatrick's offers a range of remedies, supplements, and a popular variety of traditional sweets which are guaranteed to remind you of days gone by - whatever your age!

If you have time to spare, consider spending a little of it at Fitzpatrick's enjoying one of the many drinks on offer, which include a variety of teas and smoothies, or indulging in a healthy breakfast.

You can also find Fitzpatrick's products at the local Farmers Market in Helmshore, at Ashton-Under-Lyne Market and at Keswick Market, in addition to a number of other outlets throughout the region.
Fitzpatrick's is open Monday to Saturday from 9.00am - 5.00pm. Whether you're a regular visitor who has yet to experience the new look, or you've always wondered what it was about but didn't dare to ask, now's the time to take a fresh look.
