The White Horse, Helmshore

With three young children, a night out together for my husband and I is a rare event! We like to know that where we're going will provide good food and the opportunity for relaxation that we want (sorry - need!).
Having heard excellent reports about the White Horse, Helmshore, we took a leap of faith and booked a table for two. We were not to be disappointed.
Upon arrival, we enjoyed a drink at the bar whilst selecting our meal from the menu and wine from the wine list.
The wine list consisted of enough options to please all tastes - we agreed on a delightfully light Pinot Grigio, which was served perfectly-chilled, and was just the right choice to accompany our meal.
The food menu contained a range of meals to satisfy all palettes, from local dishes such as Helmshore-reared lamb to traditional food such as cod served with chunky chips. Daily specials are also offered; on our visit you could choose from lobster or tuna.
After much deliberation, we both plumped for the Yorkshire Feta rolls to start, with my husband selecting the beef for his main course and me choosing the vegetarian option of Risotto.
The Yorkshire Feta rolls were melt-in-the-mouth delicious, as was the accompanying dip. They were light enough so as not to spoil the main event.
My husband's beef was cooked to perfection, exactly as he requested, was served atop a bed of mashed potatoes and accompanied by vegetables.
I found the Vegetable Risotto to be delicious, and the variety of vegetables meant it wasn't repetitious in the way that some risottos can be.
The service in the restaurant was excellent, and not intrusive. The bar and restaurant are segregated enough so that diners aren't interrupted by noise from the bar, and the presence of the seating area offers somewhere to relax before and after your meal.
After our meal it was back to the bar for a final drink before calling the babysitter/taxi for a lift home. The 'Squashed Frog' cocktails being served (to other people, not us!) took us back to balmy evenings spent in Spain. A step out into temperatures of minus three soon brought us back down to earth!
All-in-all, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the White Horse and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed dining experience, or simply somewhere to enjoy a drink or two in good company. We'll certainly be visiting again.
Anyone for babysitting?
