Have you booked your place at our meeting on Wednesday 16th April at 7.30 pm location Hastings High School?  We still have a few places available to the public.

Ron Grantham or Maddy Arthur HBBC, Diane Sanders Trading Standards, Leanne Town from Severn Trent and John Moore Burbage Parish Council. There will be an opportunity to ask questions to the speakers, the Burbage Beat Team and   myself. Look forward to seeing you there.

Members corner

Care - Another Neighbourhood Watch Scheme recruiting in Burbage.

Membership to Burbage Neighbourhood Watch is free as it is supported by both the Police and Burbage Parish Council. Members have reported another Neighbourhood Watch Group called ‘City and County Neighbourhood Watch Association' using the logo for NHW (that is not affiliated to the Leicestershire & Rutland County Neighbourhood Watch Association or East Midlands Neighbourhood Watch Forum) trying to recruit in the Burbage area and charges each member £8 per annum. BEWARE Please do not join as it is a waste of your money.

Spanish Lottery - The Identity Thief Scam

Care, a member has received a letter from Spanish Lottery stating they had won the lottery; all they needed to do was to complete a form with their personal and bank details and fax it to them. This organisation is working on greed to get your personal and bank details. You don't get anything for nothing in this world.

No Cold Calling

It has been reported that Anglian Windows and Cold Seal Windows are offering a free survey when calling on customers. If they have not made an appointment please let Trading Standards know on 08454 040506 as this is a form of No Cold Calling.

Duster sellers-Advice from Trading Standards

Cold Callers may arrive at your door offering very expensive house wares, e.g. dusters, tea towels or pegs. They may be carrying large shoulder bags and  claiming to be an ex. offender on a resettlement programme.

For clarification of this claim, Leicestershire Trading Standards contacted Glen Parva Youth Offending Institution and received the following Statement. "Glen Parva does not sponsor or support ex. offenders selling door to door.  It does not form part of a resettlement programme nor do we have any links with companies that set these sort of things up."   So to conclude,  if you open you door and hear the statement ‘I am an ex, offender on a resettlement programme from Glen Parva'  - they're not!

A New Member to Our Police Beat Team

  Introducing  Paul Bingham Pc 1288

Firstly, I would like to welcome Paul to the Burbage Police Team, he will be replacing PC Lesley Clarke when she retires later in the year and am sure he will be a valuable asset to the team. This gives time for Lesley to pass on her valued knowledge of Burbage to Paul prior to her retirement.

I have asked Paul to provide a few words to introduce himself to you.

‘I am 43 years old and live in the local area, I have two children who are now grown up and both have left home. I have served with the British Army as part of a Reconnaissance Regiment before taking over my family business as a Funeral Director.

I have served with West Midlands Police as a Special Constable for 3 years and resigned to join Leicestershire Constabulary as a Regular Officer in Jan 1996. My intention was to serve 2 years with Leicestershire and transfer back to West Midlands after the successful completion of my first two probationary years. Having worked in Leicestershire for the two years I liked the County so much I moved with my family into the local area 10 years ago. I was first posted to Hinckley Police Station as a General Duty Officer and got to know the Hinckley and Burbage area very well. After 2 years I was moved to Market Bosworth, again as a General Duty Officer before moving back to Hinckley as Beat Officer for Earl Shilton. I was approached to take on the Beat Officer role for Market Bosworth covering 16 villages with 5 Parish councils. I thoroughly enjoyed this role and worked very closely with Parish Councillors and various partnerships and members of public alike. I have served the last 3 years In the Police Control Room as Dispatch taking first contact calls both Emergency and non Emergency calls. In this role I have been responsible for dispatch of officers to incidents both minor and serious incidents.

I am now returning to full Operational duty as Beat Officer for the Burbage area. I am very excited at this prospect and very much looking forward to working with the various partnerships and agencies for Burbage. I am a very pro-active minded officer with a hands on approach and realise the importance of having close links with the community and partnership agencies.

Bogus NHW Callers

During the last few days I have received information about local residents living in Harborough receiving phone calls from people pretending to be representatives of Neighbourhood Watch. Be warned Burbage could be next.

In one case, the caller claimed to be the local Neighbourhood Watch coordinator and wanted to know details of the householders alarm system and where they kept their jewellery.

Firstly I would like to reassure all our residents that nobody connected with the Neighbourhood Watch Association would make calls of this kind and as such we can be fairly certain that these callers are bogus and are probably criminals trying their luck.

Secondly we would ask that if anyone receives calls of this or a similar nature, please phone the police immediately on 0116 222 2222 and let us have all the details of the call, the time it was made and if possible the number the call was made from, you can often find this by dialling 1471.

Thirdly please do not divulge any security information or personal details.
