The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is the system that allows pet dogs, cats from certain countries to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they meet the rules.
It also means that people in the UK can take their dogs, cats to other European Union (EU) countries, and return with them to the UK. They can also, having taken their dogs, cats to certain non-EU countries, bring them back to the UK without the need for quarantine.
The rules are to keep the UK free from rabies and certain other diseases.
What your pet will need
In order to obtain a passport for travel your pet will need a microchip, to be fully vaccinated and vaccinated agaianst rabies.
A blood test will need to be taken no earlier than 30 days after the rabies vaccination, this will need to come back stating the animal has adequate antibodies against the disease.
If this does not happen the vaccine will need to be administered again then a further blood test another 30 days later. The aniamal will need approved documentation.
It is also essential that the pet has specialise pet travel insurance in place should anything go wrong.
As a rule of thumb it is likely you will need to spend at least six months planning your trip.
