People shopping in Towcester on Saturday (April 28) will have a chance to win a free pint at the forthcoming Towcester Beer Festival.

At 11am on Saturday, the organisers of the beer festival will be setting up a makeshift bar in Watling Street in the middle of Towcester.

In order to win one of 60 vouchers for a free pint, shoppers will have to flick a miniature rugby ball through a set of miniature rugby posts.

Crispin Slee, one of the organisers, said: “We will be a rather unusual sight among the shoppers in Towcester on Saturday morning. We will be dressed in playing kit and the bar will have barrels and a proper hand pump.

“We won’t be serving any beer of course but we will be giving some away in the form of vouchers for the beer festival. We have 60 beers on this year – up from 40 last year – so we will be giving away vouchers for 60 free pints.”

Towcester Beer Festival runs over the first May Bank Holiday weekend, opening at 5pm on Friday May 4 and closing at 10pm on Sunday May 6. As well as 60 ales, there will be 30 different ciders.

There will be live music throughout the festival. On Friday night, a six-piece Blues Brothers Tribute Band will take to the stage.

On Saturday, there is a line up of five bands and on Sunday, a family day at the festival, Towcester Rock School will be showcasing its talent.

The festival is also famous for its Ghurka curry, served every year under the watchful eye of Mark Austin, a former Major in the Ghurkas.

Towcester Beer Festival takes place at Towcestrians RFC in Greens Norton Road, Towcester. Entry is free.

As well live music and Ghurka curry, there will be a hog roast, BBQ, live rugby, kids entertainment and the annual tug-o-war for the Roy Wilson Cup.

Last year, more than 2,000 people flocked to the event and drank the festival dry, downing 2,880 pints of real ale and 792 pints of real cider.
