(RMEM) Leading East Midlands Partners Join Regional Economic Cabinet

Published: 20th October 2008 10:26

Phil Hope, Minister for the East Midlands, today announced the composition of the Regional Economic Cabinet which has been formed to bring leadership to the region and to address current economic pressures.

The minister will chair the cabinet. The deputy chairman is Bryan Jackson, Chairman of emda, the East Midlands regional development agency. Board members will include:

Jeff Moore, Chief Executive, emda
Tom Crompton, East Midlands Regional Director, Learning and Skills Council
Karen Foulds, Customer Services Director, Jobcentre Plus East Midlands
Chris Brown, Bank of England
Cllr David Parsons, Chair of East Midlands Regional Assembly
George Coucher, Chamber of Commerce
Paul Southby, CBI
Pat Zadora, East Midlands Business Forum
Kath Lee, Federation of Small Business

Jonathan Lindley, Government Office for the East Midlands Regional Director, will support Phil Hope at this Cabinet.

Phil Hope said:

"I am delighted that, following the announcement of this new forum just one week ago, we are now ready to move forward decisively to address the issues affecting businesses in the East Midlands. The region is resilient, but we need to be prepared and to act to resolve both short- and long-term issues arising from the current credit crunch.

"The members of the Regional Economic Cabinet bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table and I am confident that we will be able to work together effectively."

The first meeting of the cabinet will take place on Friday afternoon. On the agenda will be:

* Membership, purpose and ways of working
* National overview of the economic situation and new structures
* Contributions from each cabinet member on the analysis and action for ensuring the region responds effectively to the current economic climate.

The overall purpose of the Regional Economic Cabinet is to assess current activity in the East Midlands, identify the barriers to joined-up working and challenge existing organisations and programmes in their response to the changing economic situation.
