Fort Kochi Restaurant Review

News story image for: Fort Kochi Restaurant Review

Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi is a recently opened South Indian Restaurant situated in Wellington Street in the Town Centre. If you are expecting the usual list of dhansaks, kormas and tandooris on the menu, you will be disappointed. However it is here that the disappointment will end.

South Indian cuisine is very different from the more commonly known Northern Indian cuisine. The flavors are much more subtle and delicate but no less flavoursome. The unassuming interior is modern and bright and combined with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to Fort Kochi staff who will make you feel right at home the moment you walk through the door. A well stocked bar will keep you lubricated while you browse an extensive menu of delicious dishes, including interesting specialities for those who prefer something a bit different to the usual. Prepare to be spoiled for choice and prepare for some mouthwatering dishes.

Instead of the usual pappadoms and chutneys, we started with the pre meal snacks, a delicious combination of banana chips, pappadoms and muruku, all fried cleanly and served with a mouthwatering array of fresh pickles - and so it continued with the starters - we sampled Mysore Bonda which is potato balls laced with fresh ginger coriander and mustard seeds, chickpea batter and fried, served with moist creamy coconut chutney. We also had spinach Vada - crunchy deep fried patties, deliciously spiced and fish cutlets -again wonderfully spiced and coated with breadcrumbs.

For our main meal we chose King Prawn Mosalla and Kerala Fish Fry, together with lemon rice (mouthwateringly different) and the lightest chapatis I have ever tasted. It was all delicious and served with explanations about the ingredients and the differences in the cuisine, influenced by the Kerala region, known for its Ayurvedic medicines - the food is cooked using very little oil and so considered soothing to the stomach.

To summarise I would highly recommend making a visit to Fort Kochi - the food is truly exquisite - the facilities are clean and there is disabled access and parking next door in Wellington Street, 80p evening rate. They have a couple of rooms that could be cornered off for more private parties and are slightly separate from the main restaurant. They are also open for lunchtime menus at a very reasonable £4.50 for the express lunch and £3.95 for the vegetarian express lunch - they also offer take away service and a delivery within a 3 mile radius.
