Rare opportunity for local actors
Rehearsals are about to start for Man of the Moment, the final production in Royal & Derngate's summer long Ayckbourn at 70 season. The play is being directed by the playwright himself, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, and unites a professional cast with talented local amateur actors in supporting roles. Although most of these roles have been filled the theatre is still looking for two more male actors from the local community to take part in this exciting production.
Man of the Moment was written and first performed in 1988, and its London premiere in 1990 won Alan Ayckbourn the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award. Set at a villa in Spain, complete with working swimming pool on stage, the play explores the vacuous world of celebrity culture and reality TV.
For the speaking part of Rui the theatre is looking for a man in his 40s or 50s. Mediterranean looks would be an advantage but are not essential. The character is the gardener at the villa, so should look capable of physical labour, and the actor must be able to swim. Rehearsals start from 24 June, and the actor would need to be available during the daytime on weekdays. The play opens on 27 July and runs until 15 August. There is also a non-speaking role available for a man in his 20s or 30s.
This a fantastic opportunity for keen amateur actors to experience working in a professional production, on the 125 year old Royal stage, directed by one of the most acclaimed playwrights and directors of our times, Sir Alan Ayckbourn. Although one of the most popular plays of the late 80s and early 90s, Man of the Moment has rarely been revived, due to the large cast size and the technical challenges of building a working swimming pool on the stage.
