Honorary presentations at Summer Graduations
A charity leader, comedian, bank Vice Chairman, local naturalist and a familiar University face are amongst the high profile recipients of Honorary awards at the 2008 Summer Graduation ceremonies at The University of Northampton.
Running from Tuesday, 8 July - Friday, 11 July, 2008 at Park Campus, the Summer Graduations will see over 2,000 students receive their honours. Each year, the University community nominates individuals to receive Honorary awards in recognition for their work in academia or in the region. The recipients receiving their awards at the Summer Graduation Ceremonies are as follows:
Tuesday, 8 July - 10.45am - Peter Dunkley, Head of Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service
Peter has been associated with Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service in various roles since 1987. In 2007, eight groups from the Music Service competed in the National Music Festival for Youth. The outstanding reputation of the County Music Service is down to his dedication and strong leadership.
Tuesday, 8 July - 2pm - Gary Hoffman, Group Vice Chairman, Barclays Bank
With an outstanding national and international record in banking, Gary is a local resident and currently Director of one of the largest local employers. After 25 years at Barclays, Gary became its Group Vice Chairman in July 2006. Gary has recently been appointed a Visiting Professor of The University of Northampton.
Wednesday, 9 July - 10.45am - Morcea Walker, Equalities Advisor/Supplementary Schools Co-ordinator, Northamptonshire County Council
Morcea has made an outstanding contribution to education and training in Northamptonshire over the past 30 years as an education professional and as a leading member of the African Caribbean community. She is Lead Organiser of the Northampton Carnival.
Wednesday, 9 July - 2pm - John Smeathers, local naturalist
John is a long-standing member of the Northamptonshire Natural History Society and continues to make a significant contribution to the scientific study of natural history in Northampton through individual projects and research interests.
Thursday, 10 July - 10.45am - Hugh Dennis, entertainer and comedian
Hugh Dennis met his comedy partner, Steve Punt, at university. He voiced a number of characters in the television show Spitting Image and together with David Baddiel and Robert Newman, Punt and Dennis formed The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Hugh has most recently been seen on TV as a panellist on the satirical show Mock The Week.
Friday, 11 July - 10.45am - Lady Juliet Townsend, HM Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire
Lady Juliet is Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, a post she has held since 1998. In this role, she has made a significant contribution to the life and work of the County and the University. She was Chairman of the University Court until 2007.
Friday, 11 July - 2pm - Diane Hayes, former Senior Pro Vice Chancellor and Clerk to the Governing Council, The University of Northampton
Diane retired from The University of Northampton in 2007 having worked for the higher education institution for over 25 years. From 2000 to her retirement, she was the Clerk to the Governing Council and became the University's Senior Pro Rector (and later Senior Pro Vice Chancellor) in 2004.
Friday, 11 July - 4.30pm - Camila Batmanghelidjh, Director of Kids Company
Camila is a psychotherapist and founder/Director of charity Kids Company, aimed at working with children who have complex emotional and practical needs and who are poorly served, falling through the gaps in children's services. Camila is nationally recognised for her contribution to the social inclusion agenda and gave a guest lecture at The University of Northampton in June 2007.
