Royal & Derngate - Sept - December
| Published: 16th August 2008 18:11 |
Royal & Derngate is in its Prime This Autumn
A vibrant autumn season has just been announced by Royal & Derngate, packed with popular shows and unique events. Highlights include the theatre's own bold new production of The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie and a ground-breaking adaptation of Othello. Royal & Derngate welcomes the best of national and international performers this autumn bringing a diverse programme of drama, dance, music and comedy to Northampton, along with blockbuster musicals The Witches Of Eastwick, Can't Smile Without You and Cabaret. The season culminates with colourful Christmas Show The Wizard Of Oz and sensational family pantomime Cinderella.
The season starts with the spectacular Circus Oz, coming to Northampton for the first time, as one of only five UK venues on
their tour, from Wednesday 10 to Friday 12 September. With performers from all corners of Australia, Circus Oz will set the stage alight with their brand new, high energy show. Thrilling and cheeky, this internationally acclaimed ensemble brings a stunning show of high altitude acrobatics, irreverent humour and original live music, sure to entertain the whole family.
For the Royal stage Artistic Director Laurie Sansom directs The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, rediscovering Muriel Spark's classic
story of seductive and manipulative power. In 1930s Edinburgh the scandalously outspoken and charismatic teacher, Miss Brodie, demands utter devotion from her chosen set of girls - the school's crème de la crème . But when her overt sensuality creates bitter rivalries and her passion for all things Italian embraces its fascist politics, she is in danger of destroying herself and those around her. Told through the memories of the women moulded and manipulated by her extraordinary personality, this striking new production can be seen from Friday 12 September to Saturday 4 October. The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie will also feature Madrigalis, the magnificent choir of Northampton School for Girls, singing music specially composed for this occasion.
Building on the success of its co-production of Frankenstein with top
physical theatre company Frantic Assembly, Royal & Derngate is delighted to be collaborating with them once again to bring their electrifying new take on Othello to the Royal stage from Tuesday 7 to Saturday 18 October. Frantic Assembly takes a scalpel to 21st century Britain with this compelling new look at Shakespeare's most brutal and gripping tragedy of paranoia, sex and murder, in a tense contemporary setting.
Other great plays taking to the Royal stage this autumn include an award-winning adaptation of the William Golding novel, The Lord Of The Flies (Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 October), and the classic Sherlock Holmes tale, The Hound of the Baskervilles (Monday 3 to Saturday 8 November), starring Peter Egan and Phillip Franks. West End hit Alex comes to Northampton from 10 to 15 November, with Robert Bathurst bringing Britain's favourite cartoon city slicker to three-dimensional life. Royal & Derngate is one of the sponsors of the Total Theatre Awards in Edinburgh this summer and will be staging a mini-festival From The Fringes here in Northampton from Tuesday 28 to Saturday 1 November - a week of theatre and entertainment hand-picked from the best of the Edinburgh Fringe this August. Full details will be announced soon.
The third annual Arnold Festival celebrates the life and works of Northampton's own Sir Malcolm Arnold, the prolific composer, with recitals and talks taking place all around the building throughout the weekend of 18 and 19 October. Another unique music event comes to Derngate auditorium on Tuesday 18 November when The Bays, an electronica and drum and bass band, join forces with The Heritage Orchestra, in a completely improvised concert, where along with two composers the musicians will create live music before your very eyes and ears!

Another breathtaking theatrical sensation bursts onto the Derngate stage from Monday 27 October to Saturday 1 November, when Stomp brings its unique combination of theatre, dance, comedy and percussion to town. Eight performers use boots, bins, brooms and everything including the kitchen sink to hammer out an explosively feelgood rhythm in an exhilarating show.
Derngate auditorium welcomes a feast of fantastic musicals this autumn, starting with The Witches Of Eastwick (Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 September) starring Marti Pellow as the devilish Daryl Van Horne in a bewitching show based on the hit film that starred Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Cher. Can't Smile Without You - the brand new musical love story featuring all the timeless hits from music legend Barry Manilow - comes to Royal & Derngate from Monday 10 November to Saturday 15 November, and the sensational award-winning production of Cabaret (Monday 24 to Saturday 29 November), starring Wayne Sleep as Emcee, will transport audiences into the sizzling decadence of 1930's Berlin and the world of Sally Bowles and the infamous Kit Kat Klub. The phenomenally successful High School Musical has all but sold out for its weeklong run in Northampton this autumn.
At Christmas Royal & Derngate offers two great shows for families to enjoy. In
Royal auditorium, you can follow the yellow brick road to help Dorothy and her faithful friends - Tinman, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion - on their magical, musical adventure in The Wizard Of Oz. Featuring all the favourite songs and characters from the classic movie, this masterpiece of theatrical storytelling for all ages takes to the stage from Wednesday 3 December to Sunday 11 January. Meanwhile in Derngate auditorium this year's pantomime is the best-loved of all fairy stories - Cinderella - running from Friday 12 December to Sunday 11 January. Starring pop sensation Jimmy Osmond as the lovable Buttons, this glittering and spectacular show is packed with all the essential pantomime ingredients - sumptuous sets, sparkling costumes, fun for all the family and a big helping of fairy dust. For that extra bit of magic, there'll even be real ponies to pull Cinderella's coach!
There's a host of other shows this season offering entertainment to suit all tastes. There's music from folk rock heroes The Levellers, soul legend Billy Ocean, The Temptations with Otis Williams, classical songbird Hayley Westenra and top singer/songwriter Billy Bragg. Royal & Derngate continue to bring audiences the best of British comedy with visits from Russell Howard and, best known from Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, the hilarious Paddy McGuinness. For lovers of dance, the fantastic Balletboyz present their Greatest Hits!, and the Stephen Petronio Company performs some stunning new work set to music composed specially by Rufus Wainwright. And for the personal dance experience like no other, dance sensation Silent Disco comes to town on Saturday 27 September, when you can boogie the night away wearing a wireless headset allowing you to tune in to your choice of DJs playing everything from house, punk, disco, world, electro and much more!
