Take a tour of the Guildhall
As part of Northampton's summer long heritage festival, the Guildhall will be opening its doors to the public for a series of guided tours.
Built at the height of the Gothic revival in 1864 by the celebrated architect Edward W Godwin, the Guildhall is a striking example of Victorian architecture.
Over the years the building has been added to sympathetically and is remarkably still the seat of local government and municipal services.
Kaleidoscopic stained glass windows, colourful murals, ornate archways and mouldings, exquisite carvings, a courtroom, dungeons and holding cells are just some of the building's breathtaking and bizarre features.
Councillor Paul Varnsverry, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for culture, said: "The Guildhall is an impressive building, both outside and in. The festival has many fantastic events and I'm really pleased that people with have the opportunity to see the Guildhall in all its splendour and learn about its history.
The Guildhall tours are on 20 and 27 June and 18 July, 10am to 12 noon. The number of stairs in the Guildhall means that the tours are not suitable for people with walking difficulties.
Tickets priced £2 are available from Northampton Museums on (01604) 838111 or by post or in person from Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. Spaces are limited so early booking is recommended.
