A £40,000 grant from South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) has helped towards the completion of a new building at the community centre in Greens Norton.
On Saturday, 25 March 2017 the centre held a celebratory event to mark the opening of the new building, which includes: a newly-developed meeting room, kitchen, toilets, changing room facilities, and stores.
SNC Community Grants are mainly funded by the New Homes Bonus (NHB), a grant paid to local authorities by central government for every new home built within the district.
SNC Chairman Cllr Caryl Billingham attended the opening and said she was proud that SNC was able to direct a significant proportion of the NHB towards communities like Greens Norton and added: “I know what a valued and well used asset it is to your community, and not only to the immediate community.
“In the past I have attended functions here organised by SNC, by Home-Start Daventry and South Northants and by Towcester Rotary Club, to name but three, all of whom recognise the importance and value of such a well-designed and accessible facility.
“This centre has served your village well for ten years already, providing a space for residents to host family occasions and to access community groups, for fitness classes and for adult education, among many other events.”
Ken Nicoll, chair of the community centre trustees added: “It has been a well-used community centre for around a decade now, and the main building has hosted many family milestones, community groups, sports clubs and events.
“With its growing popularity, it was getting to the point where we needed to provide more facilities to cater for this. So we are extremely thankful to SNC for helping us make this a reality.”
The project cost £100,000 and was also supported by a £50,000 contribution from the London Marathon Charitable Trust, and £10,000 from the Greens Norton Community Centre Association.
SNC Community Grants are available to any not for profit organisations located in or associated with the district.
A wide range of projects and activities may be eligible for help, including capital projects (buildings and infrastructure), as well as smaller projects such as supporting the purchase of much needed equipment or the delivery of local schemes.
