Saints Stars Support Driving Skills Day

Northampton Saints rugby players Paul Diggin and James Cannon are set to support a driving skills and awareness day for young drivers, organised by the Northamptonshire Casualty Reduction Partnership.
The CarKraft Experience day will take place at Silverstone Circuit on Sunday 22 June and 40 free places are now available for 17-24 year olds from across the county. The free day highlights road safety and includes driving experience in a skid car, experience of ABS brakes and important information about the dangers of speed and drink driving.
James Cannon, a member of the club’s senior academy and from Kettering, said: “I’m very pleased to be involved. As rugby players we spend a lot of time on the roads going to and from matches and training, and we all appreciate how important road safety is. The Casualty Reduction Partnership is very important for Northamptonshire and, being from the county myself, I’m looking forward to helping out.”
Over 1,000 young drivers have taken part in the CarKraft Experience scheme since it started in 2002. The initiative, led by Northamptonshire Police and the County Council’s Road Safety department, is part of the Casualty Reduction Partnership’s strategy to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads.
Paul Diggin from Northampton, who is beginning a new two-year contract with the Saints, said: “Safety on the roads is very important. Plenty of us know someone who has been involved in a road accident. I’m delighted to be involved with the Casualty Reduction Partnership, which I am hoping will help influence the way people think about how they drive and behave on the roads.”
Anyone living in Northamptonshire, aged between 17 and 24 and holding a full car driving licence, qualifies to apply for a place. In order to give as many young drivers as possible the opportunity to take part, previous participants are unable to apply. Participants must be able to make their own travel arrangements to Silverstone Circuit and free lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
PC Steve Harris, Casualty Reduction Officer at Northamptonshire Police, said: “Places on the last CarKraft Experience in May were snapped up very quickly and we expect demand to be even higher this time around thanks to the involvement of Paul Diggin and James Cannon from the Saints. Any young person interested in taking part is advised to apply as soon as possible before the application deadline of Friday 6 June.”
