Flood warnings and advice can be obtained from the Environment Agency floodline on 0845 988 1188.
Detailed information on how to protect homes before and during a flood is available from the Environment Agency (www.environment-agency.gov.uk).
General advice if the prospect of flooding is imminent in your area include:
- Make sure you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water supply if necessary and know beforehand where to switch them off from.
- Block airbricks and other low level openings.
- Make sure your drains are not blocked.
- Move valuable items upstairs.
- Consider keeping pets indoors and move them upstairs.
- Fill bottles with water and move them and food upstairs.
- Prepare warm clothes, medication, torch, radios, pet carriers upstairs.
- Do not travel unless absolutely necessary and listen to the local radio for updates.
Residents are reminded that they are responsible for protecting their homes and their possessions from damage due to flood waters. Local authorities across Northamptonshire do not issue sandbags to businesses and members of the public due to the difficulties in distributing large quantities of sand, bags and the subsequent filling and stacking of them in time to be of use. Homemade sandbags can be made from old pillow cases, carrier bags or even tights filled with sand or earth.
