Northamptonshire County Council's head of trading standards Bryan Lewin is due to step down as the chairman of Trading Standards Institute (TSI) this week.
Bryan ends his 12-month stint as chairman tomorrow (Tues 8th July) at the TSI annual general meeting which follows the annual conference held last month.
As chairman, Bryan has been involved in a number of national developments including engaging in a wide range of discussions with the new consumer minister, Gareth Thomas, commenting on issues stemming from the summer of toy recalls, dealing with outbreaks of foot and mouth, bluetongue and avian influenza and influencing new consumer protection legislation against unfair trading practices.
During the year he has also visited every TSI Branch in the UK for meetings, conferences or training weekends, ensuring that trading standards officers at all levels were kept up to date on matters affecting their profession.
Bryan said: "I regarded it as a tremendous personal honour to be asked to be chairman, and the support and assistance that I've received from my colleagues and councillors from the county council has enabled me to experience and enjoy a memorable year in my life. Being chairman also gave me the opportunity to promote the trading standards achievements taking place in Northamptonshire.
“Amongst many memorable events, I would say that the high point was the presentation of a TSI Hero award to Barbara Skinner, the founder of the Solve It charity based in Kettering, at our conference. This clearly demonstrated how trading standards, working with others, really can make a difference to people's lives.”
TSI chief executive Ron Gainsford said: “Bryan has been a uniquely successful TSI chairman. With his typical gusto he has seized the moment, led from the front and impressed all within the Institute and externally with his energy, knowledge, innovation and sheer will to achieve. A wonderful ambassador for Northamptonshire County Council, for trading standards and for TSI, Bryan can reflect on his year at the helm of his very special profession with immense pride. He will be sorely missed by us all".
Councillor Liz Tavener, county council cabinet member for community safety said: “I am very pleased that Bryan was able to take up this role; it is excellent recognition for the work he has done within trading standards, both in Northamptonshire and nationally. The trading standards service plays an important role in the community, offering advice to both consumers and businesses and ensuring that their interests are protected.”
