Towcester Evening WI has been involved, for many years, in a local project which stems from a national WI initiative that first began in 2002: The Community Challenge.

The WI’s aim is to make Towcester a “Green & Pleasant” Town. The WI believes that floral displays have a positive, transforming impact on local communities. They attract visitors, thus increasing local economic activity, and also improve the quality of life for residents.

This year Towcester Evening WI has been very fortunate in gaining a grant from the Northamptonshire County Council Empowering Councillors & Community Scheme, enabling the members to purchase a floral planter for the southern entrance to Towcester.  This splendid addition to the town has “Towcester” embossed in gold around it and proudly carries the county and national badges of the WI.

Towcester Evening WI would like to thank Rosemary Bromwich, County Councillor, for her support in the NCC scheme; Waitrose Store, in Towcester, for including us in their Community Matters scheme to help fund the purchase of the plants; Mike Townsend, Works Engineer from Carillion WSP, and his team for the siting of the planter; and Young’s Nurseries in Blisworth for their generous donation towards the cost of the plants.

A small ceremony was held on Friday (26th) to mark the acquisition of this impressive new planter.  The WI hopes that residents and visitors to Towcester will be uplifted by the floral displays through the seasons to come.
