The AA Grand Tour gets underway at Towcester Racecourse
The Silverstone Classic has always featured the Retro Run, with the the AA now sponsoring the Classic the event has become rather more gentil.
2012 sees the AA Grand Tour launched. It is a fun driving event for cars manufactured before 1991 and for other cars of special interest. It is neither a speed event nor a competition.
Starting at Towcester Racecourse from 9 am this morning, 120 cars from all over Europe left on three routes - two 100 mile routes and one 60 mile route, all finishing at Silverstone Circuit. Each participant is given a route book that is a series of 'tulip' diagrams so they can carefully navigate their way.
All the participants will be completing a parade lap tomorrow.
Each route is designed to have links with motoring history and pass through some of England’s most beautiful countryside for example one of the routes went to Newport Pagnell to the home of Aston Martin.
With the AA sponsoring the event all the entrants are given a special number to call in case they breakdown and the AA will despatch one of their motorcycle patrols to help them.
Keep your eyes open - you'll see plenty of them around the lanes of South Northants today.
