A textiles business established in Northampton 200 years ago has been granted permission to build a new home in Towcester.

Phipps and Co. has been based in Northampton throughout its lifetime and currently employs 16 people, most of whom live in the Towcester area.

On Thursday, 4 January 2018 South Northamptonshire Council’s Planning Committee (PC) granted permission for a 27,000sqft industrial unit off Old Tiffield Road.

Cllr Rebecca Breese, chairman of the PC, said: “Phipps have proposed a unit more than twice the size of the one they currently operate from. They will need two more people straight away and if this move is successful they may need more.

“Towcester has an underused, derelict site with permission for employment use and I hope this is the start of a mutually beneficial relationship between South Northamptonshire and Phipps which will continue their legacy.”

Northamptonshire County Council Highways suggested the applicant make a payment towards improvements to the junction of the A5 already required as a result of permission for a retail development also off Old Tiffield Road, however planners said planning guidance would not justify the request in this case as the site already had the benefit of an extant planning permission for commercial development.
