What Does Towcester Want In Its Museum?
| Published: 22nd January 2008 09:02 |
Social history comes out as the strongest theme for the majority of the groups questioned, although the school groups surveyed were most interested in military history, especially Roman history.
For schools, a website with worksheets that could be downloaded either before or after a visit would be popular as would loan boxes full of artifacts. The teachers surveyed want the museum to offer opportunities for cross-curricular learning and gave us some pointers to how the museum could tie in with an extended school agenda.
Another clear message that came through is that there is strong support for a museum in Towcester. Nearly 90% of all those questioned said they would visit it at least once and more than half would visit twice a year. Three-quarters of those surveyed said that they would like to have a museum where they could bring visiting family and friends.

Setting up a museum is an exciting project and many people have already got involved.Details of research and fundraising volunteering opportunities with the museum are available from the South Northants Volunteer Bureau in Moat Lane, Towcester. You can reach them on 01327 358264.
If you would like to have an informal discussion about the museum’s volunteering opportunities please contact us on 01327 352660.
Why do we need this information?
The information that we gathered last summer will underpin our grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in February 2008. They want to know that the museum will really belong to the community and will be part of the cultural life of Towcester and the surrounding area. So having a large number of people saying that they would want to visit the museum, and bring family and friends, is a real plus for our application. The HLF are also keen that what gets exhibited and explained in the museum is of interest to people in the local area. If HLF are going to support us, they have to be convinced that the museum has local support and will grow over the years.
