Tragedy In Abthorpe On Guy Fawkes

Author: John Riches Published: 8th November 2009 19:00

Mrs Barbara “Bett” Rush. Mrs Barbara “Bett” Rush.

Tragedy. A tragedy has struck our small community. During the morning of Thursday 5th November Mrs Enid Lawrence (71) from our neighbouring village of Slapton and our own 87 years old Mrs Barbara Rush; known affectionately as Bett; set off to do some shopping in our local town of Towcester.

At the crossroads, just outside our village, the taxi in which they were travelling was involved in a serious collision with an orange transit van. Tragically Mrs Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident whilst Bett was airlifted by the air ambulance helicopter to Northampton General Hospital suffering from serious injuries.

The sympathy and love of everyone in Abthorpe go to Enid’s husband Peter and his family. Enid and Peter had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary only days before. On Sunday 1st November Bett had agreed to take a leading role in our Remembrance Day service as a representative of the older generation.

Then as she proceeded down the steps on the south side of our church to walk to her home, she stated that she was in good shape for an old ‘un. A while ago Bett believed that she was the oldest driver in the village but decided to give up her car and take a taxi whenever she needed to go into town. At the Remembrance Day service the congregation was asked to think of Enid and Bett during the silence to honour local servicemen killed in action. Following the collision the roads at the crossroads were closed for many hours by Northamptonshire Police so that investigations could be made.

As soon as it became apparent what had happened, a message was flashed round the village by ABbA our independent broadband network. A man, who is not local, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
