Mark Brereton tens his water lilies
Most English farmers harvest their crops in late summer or autumn, but for Mark Brereton from Abthorpe, his harvest is already in full swing as he provides his customers with the products of his labour mostly between March and September. Mark describes himself as an aquatic nurseryman and supplies a large variety of underwater and water loving plants wholesale to garden centres and nurseries.
He specialises in water lilies and grows 35 varieties that range from large to a tiny pygmy variety. Mark’s favourite is called Aurora – a lily that changes colour throughout its flowering life. He explained that after leaving school in North Lincolnshire he worked in a fresh water fish farm where he became interested in aquatic plants.
Now he has chalked-up over 20 years experience in his chosen trade. Eight years ago he set up in Abthorpe where his Dad, a qualified plumber, undertook much of the plumbing work to connect his extensive pond network to a water supply. In addition to selling aquatic plants, he offers a pond cleaning and maintenance service that is used by people throughout the district.
