£3 Million Awarded For Affordable Housing

South Northamptonshire Council has secured millions of pounds worth of cash from the Housing Corporation that will be used to build nearly 100 affordable homes across the district.
A total of £3,119,000 has been allocated to the Council to build 96 new homes for ‘social rent’, which means below market rent, and shared ownership.
The homes will be available to households on the Council’s housing waiting list. They will be built on new developments in Deanshanger and Grange Park. There will also be some supported housing in Brackley for adults with learning difficulties.
The Council’s strategic housing team work with parishes across the district to find out which villages need more affordable homes. The Council will then work in partnership with landowners and housing associations to meet this need by establishing new affordable developments such as these.
The funding has been allocated in response to bids made in partnership with housing associations to the Housing Corporation and is part of a national strategy for delivering 47,000 affordable homes across the country. There will be further opportunities to bid for more funding later in the year.
Councillor Mary Clarke, portfolio holder for affordable housing said: “This funding is a significant step towards our goal of providing good quality housing in the district at rental or purchase prices that are affordable to local people on local wages.
“With high property prices in the area, these type of schemes really do help those on moderate incomes buy a home of their own. In addition, the funding will also help those who can’t afford to buy, rent a home at an affordable rent.”
