GNCC Vs Castlethorpe

Having been beaten twice by Norton this season Castlethorpe returned to the Churchill Oval on Grand Prix weekend with drizzle and hope in the air. Norton won the toss and elected to bowl as is traditional where rain could impact.

Castlethorpe started slowly with Skipper Jones (4) going early to an inswinger from Jenkin. Consolidation followed and although quick singles put the pressure on the fielders this was not without its issues seeing Naqvi run out for 8 – Castlethorpe 30-2 after 10.

Wallis took Singh-Maan (7) well caught off Bowmer, who also snared Nightingale (9) Lbw, to see Castlethorpe slump to 42-4. This brought in Atif Mushtaq who had batted well in the previous Cup match his batting partner Sam Brightwell.

This partnership proved to be pivotal but it could have been so different as Skipper Baker had brilliantly plotted a field and Atif drilled one straight to deep cover perfectly placed, only to be dropped by the Skipper himself off Bowmer Jnr, it could have been 47-5. From there though this partnership took Castlethorpe on to 80, before Brightwell was bowled by Wallis for 18.

Atif and Ali Asghar then quickly pushed on with 15 overs left to get to a decent score, Atif eventually out bowled by the returning Bowmer Snr (3-43) for an excellent 83 and Ali Asghar ended 31 not out off only 15 balls – Castlethorpe 188-8 after their 40 overs, and no sign of rain.

Bodily and Bristow opened up for Norton with Naqvi opening the bowling with a few wides but going round the wicket to sort this out saw the end of Bristow bowled round his legs in the first over.

Baker joined Bodily and some recovery was seen, Norton moved on to 32-1 off 10 before a frustrated Baker fell slogging for 3. New batsman Turner was greeted by change bowler Brightwell with one on the elbow as well as some chirp from the bowler, despite a haircut that would have disappointed the sheep in the field next door.

Turner was unlucky to get the short ball that kept low and was bowled for 10, Bodily had one from Brightwell bounce over his head and was then bowled, by the consistent Mushtaq, unable to push on from his excellent 41. Norton 75-4 and struggling with the run rate

Castlethorpe’s change bowlers seemed a step up as Singh-Maan came on and snared Pittom (16) with a boomerang inswinger, Robinson (4) and Bowmer Jnr (6) did not last much longer and despite the efforts of Jenkin (15) Singh-Maan cleared up the tail as they vainly attempted to increase the run rate – he managed 5-20 as Norton subsided to 117 all out in the final over.

A disappointing loss for Norton by a Castlethorpe side that looks a country mile better that the side we played earlier in the season.
