GNCC Vs Byfield A

The midweek cup final is, somewhat oddly, always played on a Sunday and this year Norton were hosted by Woodford Halse for their match against Byfield’s A team. The weather was expected to be showery but Byfield decided to bat first – never an easy call.

Norton started well with Kightley and Jenkin keeping Adkins and the aggressive Newby quiet initially, a few wides saw the score creep up to 27 off 6 and an interruption for rain. No over reductions apply in the 20 over version of the game.

After the break spinner Yuill was introduced to the attack and had an immediate impact having Newby LBW for 18. As drizzle continued Yuill had Adkins (12) caught and Cook (17) bowled with Bowmer at the other end going for a few runs but bowling the dangerous Andrews. Yuill finishing his 5 over allowance with an excellent 4-13.

Jenkin and Kightley finished off the last 4 overs with control and Byfield struggled to 94-5 with the steady Moyce top scoring with 18 not out. Overall a solid bowling display even if the fielding looked less than perfect.

Norton’s response saw sunny skies and a much better day with Bodily and Bristow taking care but without scares took the score to 26-0 off 5. Byfield introduced Lowe to bowl and he conceded 10 extras and a boundary – not a great over - and this pushed Norton forward.

Bristow hit Cook for 6 and was immediately lbw for 21, Bodily went next over caught off Moyce for 16 and Norton were 61-2 with 34 needed off 48 balls.

Yuill and Honour proceeded to carefully farm the bowling seemingly able to pick off boundaries at will. Yuill moved on to 27 and took Norton to within one shot of the victory before failing to clear the fielder for the winning run off Newby. This honour was left to Will of that name who clipped Moyce to the boundary for the winning runs and to see himself to 11 not out.

Norton comfy winners of the first Division Cup with 20 balls to spare.
