Tiffield Pocket Park Awarded Local Reserve Status

A former railway which was transformed into a pocket park in 2001 has been declared a local nature reserve with thanks to the hard work from local volunteers working in support with Northamptonshire County Council.
Tiffield pocket park is the first park to be awarded a local nature reserve status in South Northamptonshire and is looked after by volunteers who carry out regular conservation tasks and planning meetings.
Councillor Ursula Jones, cabinet member for voluntary sector, communications and heritage said: "To be declared the first local nature reserve in South Northamptonshire is a fantastic achievement for all the volunteers and people involved in Tiffield pocket park. Hopefully this will be the step forward for pocket parks in our county, with Greens Norton hopefully being declared a local nature reserve in the next couple of months."
Scrub clearance is just one of the tasks which has enabled the limestone grassland to return to the steep banks of the railway. Wildlife now thrives in the ideal environments and varied conditions created which contain species such as twayblade, early purple orchid, and knapweed.
Additionally, an old balancing pond has been revived and is now host to a multitude of aquatic plants and creatures, and a platform has been erected to facilitate pond-dipping by local schoolchildren.
There are now over 80 pocket parks all over Northamptonshire and each one is unique and special and can be found in all types of locations from busy town centres to quiet villages. They are run by the county council in partnership with many organisations and other local authorities.
This achievement has helped to create a cleaner, greener and safer environment for the people of Northamptonshire.
