BROXTOWE TEACHERS LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Teachers from Broxtowe Borough recently took part in a ‘learning outside the classroom' event aimed at providing them with new ideas and experiences for teaching outdoor education. The teachers each designed their own farms, received a wealth of information and advice about activities and celebrated the launch of an exciting new ‘Lesson In A Box' resource for use by local schools.
Teachers from 11 different schools across Broxtowe Borough took part in an event which started at Durban House Heritage Centre in Eastwood with a fun activity to design farms as a way to explore links between outside visits and the curriculum. The government's Manifesto for Learning Outside the Classroom was highlighted and there were lots of additional information about opportunities for school visits to sites across Broxtowe Borough and beyond.
The event then moved on to the outdoor auditorium at Colliers Wood, Moorgreen where the teachers braved the rain to take part in the launch of the Lesson In A Box resource. This resource, developed by Greenwood Community Forest, Broxtowe Borough Council and the Friends of Colliers Wood, enables pupils to explore a woodland habitat and get close to nature through hands-on activities designed specifically for the environment and facilities at Colliers Wood. The resource is available for schools to borrow from Durban House.
The learning outside the classroom event was organised by the Your School Your Environment project, a partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council, Greenwood Community Forest, Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
Your School Your Environment promotes environmental education and activities supporting sustainability in schools by offering advice and information to teachers across Broxtowe.
