POLICE URGE PENSIONERS TO SECURE SAVINGS
Nottinghamshire Police is urging elderly residents to keep their money in a safe and secure place after a distraction burglar stole thousands of pounds from a pensioner.
The burglary occurred when a cold caller went to the home of an 88-year-old woman and claimed he was collecting the window cleaning money.
The rogue trader then conned his way into the home and stole a substantial amount of cash.
Officers are now urging all residents, but particularly pensioners, to secure all their money and cash.
Detective Inspector Stuart McHattie said: "Unfortunately these type of thieves target all residents, but specifically elderly residents and are intent on stealing valuables and cash.
"The best way to protect yourself is simply by not opening your door to anyone who hasn't pre-arranged a visit. Alternatively use a security chain to find out what these people want before opening or shutting the door.
"I would also advise that anyone who does have money in the house, to either ensure it is placed in a safe, which is out of sight, or is placed in a bank or building society account."
Police are also urging the relatives of vulnerable and elderly residents to make sure money and valuable items are safe and secure.
DI McHattie added: "If you suspect anything simply do not open your door, if you don't allow these thieves to enter your home they cannot steal anything.
"Then call the police and officers will respond and come and find out what is going on."
Anyone with information about bogus callers should call Nottinghamshire Police on 0115 967 0999 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
