Policy and development
www.parentlineplus.org.uk/forprofessionals

Parentline Plus would like to introduce our brand new website, Parentline Plus for Professionals.
This new online development has been created to allow one central virtual space for all of our policy work. A one-stop-shop for our reports, responses and consultations, the Parentline Plus for Professionals website also allows for social networking between professionals via message boards and blogs and for online ordering of materials and information about our external training. Its official launch date is 28th April so please take a look and send any feedback to Hilary Chamberlain Policy Manager, HilaryC@parentlineplus.org.uk

Risky behaviour and setting boundaries
Have adults somehow lost the ability to ‘control' children and young people? This month we launch a new policy briefing report on what parents say about the challenges of parenting teenagers and pre-teens, to ensure they stay safe.
We conducted a review of the literature and consulted parents via a web survey and focus groups. The key findings identified that:
• Parents are looking for support during their children's teenage and pre-teen years.
• Supporting parents requires long-term commitment, long-term funding and support for practitioners.
• Most parents use similar strategies to exert ‘control' over their children: withdrawing privileges, reducing independence or withholding money.
• Parents would welcome greater cooperation between homes and schools.
• Lone and separated parents may need extra support during the teenage years.
• Parents would like to see more organised activities for teenagers.
You can read the full report in our policy section.

Drugs and alcohol education survey
We also have a web survey to get a very quick picture of how parents feel about drugs and alcohol education and what they think their role should be in this. The survey is completely anonymous and confidential and will only take a few minutes to complete; we would really appreciate your views.

Parenting in the news
Will they ever fly the nest? What parents say about living with young adults
Parentline Plus launched a highly-successful new report ‘Will they ever fly the nest?' focusing on the strain of young adults coming back to live at the parental home. One caller told Parentline, "I'm not sure what my role is with my son now. As a mother I feel very insecure at this point. This is a transition and difficult for me as a parent to adjust to this new relationship". In the report, Parentline Plus calls on the government to find ways of supporting parents of young adults to influence their children's work and personal choices.

Cameron's paternity leave debate
Parentline Plus has also been involved in the debate about David Cameron's proposals to give six months paternity leave to dads after the birth of their baby.

Stop blaming parents
We've also been working on the need to stop blaming parents and to see seeking help as a sign of strength, not an admission of failure.
There are lots of links in this article so please visit the Parentline website to view all of the additional information.
