M1 bridge work - Junction 26

Published: 6th March 2008 16:16

Highways Agency (East Midlands)
(Highways Agency) M1 widening J25-28: work starts on A610 bridges at junction 26, near Nottingham

Work to upgrade the two bridges which carry the M1 over the A610 at Junction 26 near Nuthall, Nottingham, begins this Monday, 10 March and is expected to be completed in July 2008.
The work is part of the larger scheme to reduce congestion and improve safety by widening the M1 to four lanes, plus a hard shoulder, between Junction 25 at Sandiacre and Junction 28 at Pinxton.
The work on the two bridges will involve upgrading the parapets, or side fencing, to bring them up to modern standards and reduce the risk of an incident on the M1 affecting the A610 below.
During the upgrading work there will be single lane closures on the westbound and eastbound A610 approaches to the Junction 26 roundabout and on the on roundabout.
In order to limit any delays, these restrictions will be limited to the off-peak hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm during the day and 8pm to 5am overnight, although there will be a temporary speed limit of 30mph for 24 hours a day throughout the construction period.
Highways Agency project leader Tony Turton said:
"Although the restrictions will only be in place during off peak hours, the M1 widening work will be taking place at all times of the day so the lower speed limit will remain in place in order to protect road users and the workforce.
"We advise road users to allow extra time for their journeys or to seek alternative routes or times of travel. There will be no additional restrictions on the M1, other than what is already in place."
