M1 Bridge Widening Work

Highways Agency (East Midlands)
(Highways Agency) M1 widening J25-28: work begins to widen bridges at Pinxton, Derbyshire

Work to widen two bridges which carry the M1 over local roads at Pinxton in Derbyshire begins on Tuesday, 25 March for eight months.
The work is part of a larger scheme to reduce congestion and improve safety by widening the M1 to four lanes, plus a hard shoulder, between Junction 25 at Sandiacre and Junction 28 at Pinxton.
Work will initially be carried out on the bridge over the B6019 Kirkby Lane (marked on some maps as Pinxton Green), with temporary traffic lights in place from 25 March until Wednesday, 9 April. Kirkby Lane will then be fully closed from Thursday, 10 April until July 2008.
Work at Brookhill Lane will require two-way temporary traffic lights in April or May for around four weeks to enable utility companies to relocate cabling or pipes. Once Kirkby Lane re-opens in July, Brookhill Lane will then close to all traffic until November. In both cases pedestrian access will be maintained and diversion routes will be clearly signed.
Highways Agency project leader Tony Turton, said:
"This work will be a major piece of engineering. Full closures of the roads underneath the bridges will be needed so that we can carry out the work safely. The closures will also help us complete the bridge work more quickly. We apologise for any disruption this will cause, but we will do all we can to limit any delays during the scheme. That is why we are giving advance notice to roads users, so that they can plan their routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
"To widen the bridges we first need to demolish the existing parapets before adding a number of reinforced concrete beams. The Kirkby Lane bridge will then be widened by 1.5 metres either side while the Brookhill Lane bridge will be extended by 4.6 metres on the northbound side and just under a metre on the southbound.
"At Kirkby Lane we will add two beams to each side of the bridge, each weighing 11 tonnes and measuring 14.4 metres. Brookhill Lane involves adding six beams on the northbound side and one on the southbound. The longest will be 16.5 metres and the heaviest 18 tonnes."
During the Kirkby Lane closure traffic will be diverted along the B6019 Town Street, Alfreton Road, Pinxton Lane, Mansfield Road, over Junction 28 of the M1 to the A38 Mansfield Road then continue on the A38 to Sutton Road, Church Street, Church Hill and Pinxton Lane before rejoining Kirkby Lane, or vice versa.
The Brookhill Lane closure diversion will follow the same route as far as the A38 Mansfield Road, then turns into Pinxton Lane before rejoining Brookhill Lane.
There will be a small number of overnight lane closures on the M1 when the bridge beams are lifted into place, which will be publicised nearer the time, but other than that there will be no impact on motorway traffic. The Pinxton section of the M1 currently has no restrictions.
