YOGA CAN HELP DEAL WITH HECTIC STRESSFUL LIVES
| Published: 17th April 2008 11:19 |
We all need to have some "me" time in our busy, hectic, often stressful lives

As a woman, Philippa Dean knows how much juggling with all the various areas of their lives women have to do. We sometimes get "overload" (when we know/feel we just can't take on any more, but still do!). This is the time to reflect on exactly why we do this and how to help ourselves to cope better.
As an experienced Complementary Health Therapist she sees this "overload syndrome" frequently in many of her female clients (men are not exempt, but they sometimes tend to hide it more!). This syndrome can lead to stress, anxiety, depression and physical problems, such as back/neck/shoulder problems, migraines/headaches, digestive/bowel disorders, insomnia, tension. There are many other health benefits from practicing regular Yoga, especially concerning strengthening and building up the spinal muscles in the back. In a survey recently carried out, 80% of absenteeism from work is caused by back problems. Anyone with serious back or neck problems will need to talk to their Doctor before joining any Yoga classes.
Philippa started her successful Yoga-based Relax and Stretch classes in Bramcote Village three years ago, to help women especially, cope with their lives in a more constructive way and encourage them to totally unwind and let go, help them feel more relaxed, balanced, flexible, energised, stronger and in control of their own bodies.
Yoga is about working on the mind, body and spirit connection. In her classes students learn a routine of postures and gentle movements, which are performed in the lying, standing, seated and kneeling position. These are combined with breathing techniques designed to induce a maximum state of bodily relaxation and awareness. The aim is to regulate the flow of breath in co-ordination with the movements of the body and is an important part of what Philippa teaches. Without food we can live for several weeks, without water, for several days, but without breath, we cannot live for more than a few moments.
Philippa's students frequently report deep relaxation, enhanced sleep patterns, ease of joint mobility, more flexibility and suppleness, better concentration, release of tension, improved circulation and breathing. Various conditions, such as backache, tension, headaches, high and low blood pressure, period pains and menopausal symptoms can be alleviated with Yoga. Some Doctors are now agreeing with these benefits and recommend Yoga to their patients. She emphasises that regular Yoga practice is necessary to obtain any of these benefits.
