Amnesty International - Minehead
| Published: 28th September 2006 20:49 |
Amnesty International is a human rights organisation, working worldwide for the release of prisoners of conscience, fair trial for political prisoners and an end to torture, the death penalty, extra-judicial executions and ‘disappearances’.
Amnesty’s success over the past 40 years depends on the work carried out by its members and supporters. Local groups all over the country take up Amnesty’s issues.
A group was formed in Minehead at the end of 2002, is active and well supported and will be glad to hear from anyone interested in joining it.
Group activities include:
Learning about situations with which Amnesty is concerned
Joining in current major campaigns (including
Stopping Violence Against Women and Terrorism, Security and Human Rights)
Campaigning for the release of a group of people in Equatorial Guinea, unjustly imprisoned in 2002 after being tortured and given an unfair trial (the Group’s special responsibility)
Letter writing to foreign governments appealing on behalf of Human Rights victims
Lobbying MPs and MEPs for support
Raising awareness in this area of Amnesty through public meetings, stalls at fetes and sales
Fundraising to support the professional, independent and internationally respected research carried out by Amnesty
Reports of the group appear regularly in the West Somerset Free Press, the Somerset County Gazette and The Crier.
The Group meets on a Tuesday evening monthly in Minehead.
If you would like to find out more about it, please contact the Secretary, Chris Lawson, Tel. 01643-704779
