Council Launches New Mortgage Advice Helpline

Published: 4th May 2010 19:52
A new service launched this week will offer free advice to homeowners in Somerset who are worried about their mortgage.

The Somerset mortgage advice line has been set up to help support homeowners who have been affected by the recession.

The dedicated low cost phone number will give homeowners access to independent advice if they are in mortgage arrears or have concerns about their mortgage.

Somerset mortgage advice line can be contacted on 0300 343 0013.
Lines are open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday with a late opening on Wednesday until 6.30pm.

As well as offering independent advice on mortgage worries the advisors can give callers guidance on the benefits that they may be entitled to and direct them to the correct agencies for support with this.

The advice line has been set up in partnership by West Somerset Council, South Somerset District Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, and Taunton Deane Borough Council, and is being delivered by Taunton Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

Peter McGuire, Somerset recession impact coordinator working on behalf of the district councils, said: "Over the last couple of years the number of homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgage has increased significantly. The international credit crunch has meant that repossession claims have increased dramatically in Somerset over the period.

"The new phone number has been set up in partnership with the district councils and CAB to utilise the skills, experience and resources already in place at the advice bureaux across Somerset to help offer value for money in providing the service. "

Residents can also access the advice line by logging onto www.somersetsupport.co.uk  by submitting their name, address and phone number.
They will receive a free information pack through the post followed by tailored and helpful advice from a specialist by phone.

Peter Dix, finance and office manager of Taunton Citizens Advice Bureau said: "The Somerset mortgage advice line is a much needed service to encourage homeowners who are worried about their mortgage to seek help at the earliest time before their situation gets out of hand. It is much easier to deal with in the early stages."

If you would like helpful advice because you are worried about your mortgage or in arrears, please phone the Somerset mortgage advice line on 0300 343 0013 or log onto www.somersetsupport.co.uk. The lines are open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday with a late opening on Wednesday until 6.30pm.
